VLM320 |
Non-contact measuring of length and speed |
| |

Why non-contact measuring?

With optical sensors, completely new perspectives are opened for industries in the fields of quality
maintenance and automation processes. Length and speed can be measured exceptionally precisely, without
contact and thus without wear; where the usual methods either cannot be used owing to process conditions
or are not sufficiently exact.
With the VLM 350, ASTECH offers anexceptionally robust and dependable sensor,
which has been specifically tailored to the requirements of
industrial use. Regardless of material, the VLM 350 measures lengths and speeds without contact and its
interfaces allow it to be integrated optimally to automation and quality maintenance processes in many
branches of industry.

Function Description

The VLM320 operates optical with non-contact and implemented based on a CCD sensor the spatial filter principle.
Spatial filter is the generic term for a non-contact measuring principle for determining the speed and length of moving materials.

The spatial filter based on the filtering action lattice-like structures (grid modulation).
One can simplify the function of the VLM320 described as follows:
The measuring object is imaged through the lens on the CCD array. The CCD array operates as an optical grid (no picture shooting).
For illumination of the object is an integrated light source (LED). Ambient light interference is effectively suppressed by the process.
Because of the grid modulation is created by movement of the object, a signal frequency that is proportional to speed.
From the measured signal frequency is calculated the speed and length in the unit.
Multiple ontrol loops allow the automatic adaptation to different materials (texture and brightness of the material).
Robust and precise

The VLM320's robust construction allows it to be operated in rugged industrial environments and
also enables it to measure speed and lengths in a wide range of processes, leading to exactness and
a high measuring dynamic.
Less servicing

Its contact-free measuring system allows the VLM320 to operate not only more precisely than
other existing systems, but also without wearing out, as the absence of friction reduces the need
for servicing. Damaging or dirtying of the measuring surface do not arise at all.
Flexible and multi-sided

The VLM320 operates autonomously; sensor, light source, signal processing and power supply
are all integrated in the unit. The user is guaranteed highly flexible operation by the digital
system concept, which places a wide range of functions at his disposal. Via its interfaces, the
VLM 320 can easily be hooked up to existing processes, drives or data acquisition. It is easy
to set-up and to operate.
Standard package as a Set

Due to the complete package the VLM320 is quick to use:

- utput error (device has extensive self-diagnostics)
- Output status (programmable)
- Standby input
- Trigger input
- Direction input (alternatively as a second trigger input when using two light barriers)
|
Powerful Options

Extensive expansion options make the VLM320 even more versatile:
|
- Profibus(IFProfi)
- Two additional pulse outputs with 5V/2MHz (IF3-5V), passive 12 to 24V/25kHz (IF2) or active 24V/50kHz (IF2-PP)

Performance and advantages

The VLM 320 lays down hardly any conditions as to the surface structure of the object to be measured.
Measurements can be made just as precisely on the periodic structures of textiles as on the stochastic surfaces of metals, wood, rubber or paper.
