Task:
Abrasion measurement
Areas:
Research and Development
Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Description:
In order to achieve a high lifetime, starter motors need to be constructed in such a way that the abrasion on the commutator contacts is at a minimum. In the development and optimization of the contact materials, abrasion is determined through coloring. CROMLAVIEW® color sensors display the coloring in colorimetric values, so that the abrasion can be quantitated.

Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Position (CR)
Description:
The application of clear varnish on the printing image of a tin gives it a special finish. Clear varnish and printing image, however, need to be one on top of the other. Offset can be detected with a color sensor in the dual-channel mode. One channel detects start and finish of the printing image, whereas the second channel records the clear varnish application at these transitions. In accordance with the time-wise synchronicity of the output results the offset can be adjusted.

Task:
Coating inspection of foam material
Areas:
Conveyor belt
Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Position detection (CR)
Description:
Foam material, which is to be coated on one side, is transported on a conveyor belt. Both, the foam and the coating material can attain different colors. In order to minimize the effort, not each color is to be taught in. The differential color sensor CR200 is used to teach in a zero-difference on both sides of the foam. Independently from the color, it is possible to recognize if both sides of the foam are the same or if one side is coated. With the FOR-C2.0-50 optics this works also with deviations in positioning of approx. 20mm.

Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Description:
Accordance of enamel insets with wash basins in terms of color is required in the production of an enamel manufacture. Color inspection of the enamel insets is carried out at a manual workplace, and it puts high requirements on the color sensor and its capability to differentiate colors. On the one hand, the use of the color sensor relieves the eye, and on the other hand the complaint rate is virtually zero, as the coloring is assessed objectively.

Task:
Color mark detection
Areas:
Tube inspection lines
Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Description:
The recognition of color markings on tubes for the sorting out of faulty tubes with changing tube diameters is a task for the CROMLAVIEW® CR200 color sensor, as it can detect two measuring points simultaneously. After applying the color mark in the tube marking system, the tube moves through the system. Since the tube rotates it cannot be guaranteed that the color mark occupies a certain position. So a 360°-color-mark-detection is necessary, which can be achieved by six measuring points. When changing the diameter, all six measuring points are re-teached in parallel by a trigger pulse. Using a background target, the tube start and end can be detected.

Task:
Color measurement of salmon meat
Areas:
Conveyor belt
Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Description:
Salmon meat actually has a white color. However, consumers do like the orange to reddish color named after him. The reason for this is the carotenoid Astaxanthin, which occurs naturally in the nutriment of salmon or in aquaculture is added to the nutriment. Price differences of up to $ 2 / kg can be achieved solely by color enhancement. For this reason, in salmon processing, the color is measured and documented with a CROMLAVIEW® color sensor. For color measurement, a suitable optics with a measuring distance of about 1 meter above the conveyor belt is attached. Due to the inclination of the optics, the gloss of the surface is largely excluded.

Task:
Control of shears
Areas:
Finishing, Slitting line, Winder
Measured Variables:
Length (VLM)
Description:
In the finishing line of aluminium foil rolling mills there is a need for contact and slip-free as well as highly accurate length measurement without wear. The length of the coils to be measured is within a range of 10,000 m and 30,000 m. The foils are just 0.03 to 0.3 mm thick. The VLM is used for the control of winders, so that safety margins of 0.025% are sufficient.

Control of shears
Areas:
Extruder
Measured Variables:
Velocity (VLM)
Length (VLM)
Description:
Ceramic material for the production of catalyser bodies is extruded at a velocity of between 0.5 m/min and 10 m/min. Cutting is done by a flying saw. The VLM measuring device provides the shear control with velocity and length values. Contact-free measurement eliminates damage to material (such as crushing the soft ceramics). The measurement is not affected by humidity or a water film on the surface of the material.
Products: VLM500, VLM502

Task:
Control of shears
Areas:
Slitting shears
Measured Variables:
Velocity (VLM)
Description:
The finishing process of steel strips by means of slitting shears is supported by the use of the VLM measuring device. The rotation velocity of the shear blades depends on the velocity of the strip. Precise detection of the steel strip velocity helps to optimize the velocity of the blades and to minimize their attrition. Contact-free measurement eliminates damage to material. Measuring accuracy of less than 0.1% can be achieved.

Task:
Distance measurement
Areas:
Ports, docking systems
Measured Variables:
Distance (LDM)
Velocity 1 (LDM)
Velocity 2 (LDM)
Description:
Laser distance sensors of the type LDM302A are used in docking systems for vessels. They measure the distance from the edge of the quay to the incoming vessel and ensure that the navigator is informed about the current distance between the vessel and the landing pier at all times. The LDM302A uses invisible, eye-safe IR laser pulses to measure the distance to almost any natural surface in up to 300m distance. For the implementation in docking systems it is crucial that all kinds of hulks, whether they are rusty or freshly painted, can be detected reliably. This is ensured by the LDM302A. The LDM302A is also able to measure the current speed of the vessel along the laser beam based on the measured distance and its change.

Task:
Egg yolk color classification
Areas:
Laboratory
Measured Variables:
Color (CR)
Description:
For three-quarters of all Germans, yolk color is the most important criterion for assessing egg quality. The yolk color depends on the amount and mixture of carotenoids in the feed of the laying hens. In the analysis, a 15-step color fan (Hoffmann La Roche) has prevailed, starting with a pale yellow, over a darker yellow to an orange tone. With the CROMLAVIEW® color sensors, an automated and error-free classification of the egg yolk color is possible. In binary mode, all 15 colors can be displayed with only four switching outputs.

Task:
Fill level measurement
Areas:
Bulk solid silo
Measured Variables:
Fill level (LDM)
Description:
Sand and other bulk solids are often stored in silos. The laser distance sensors of the type LDM41A are used there to monitor the fill level. Via the freely programmable analog output (4mA ... 20mA) they provide the superior control with distance information continuously. From the measured distance between the measuring device and the surface, the fill level and/or the volume can easily be calculated. The LDM41A measures reliably on almost any solid natural surface, such as sand, cement, plastic granulate, forage or wood pellets.

Task:
Fill level measurement
Areas:
Cement storage
Measured Variables:
Fill level (LDM)
Description:
In huge storage depots cement is allocated from a train to several large storage boxes. Several laser distance measuring devices of the type LDM41P are deployed to provide the crane operator with precise information on the amount of cement each of the boxes can still take. The communication via PROFIBUS facilitates gathering distance information of several measuring devices easily in a central place. Efforts for wiring the measuring points are substantially reduced. Besides that, functional reliability of the complete plant is increased, as for example, defect wiring or the failure of a whole device is detected by the diagnosis and alarm function of the PROFIBUS.

Length measurement
Areas:
Quality assurance
Measured Variables:
Length (VLM)
Description:
Round profiles of stainless steel are cut into lengths of between 3000 and 6000 mm and afterwards measured, whereby the demanded accuracy is 0.1%. The contact-free operation of the VLM devices considerably eases the measurement of individual objects compared with tactile measuring procedures (e.g. wheels). Measurement on shiny surfaces does not cause any problems. Each measured length value is sent digitally to a PLC.

Task:
Length measurement
Areas:
Coiling machines
Measured Variables:
Length (VLM)

Task:
Length measurement
Areas:
Steel billets
Measured Variables:
Length (LDM)
Description:
Two laser distance measuring devices are used for length measurements of steel billets. The steel billets have a diameter of approx. 15 cm and can have a total length of between 10 m und 20 m. On the transport from the storage area to the furnace the billets are moved crossways between the two LDMs. This way the devices measure the distance to the abutting faces of the billets and send the results by PROFIBUS to a PLC, which then calculates the total length of the steel billet by using the previously known distance and the measured data. As the measurement is performed outdoors, the measuring devices have been integrated into additional protective cases. One of the two devices is to be installed directly before the entrance to the furnace. Due to the high temperatures in this area, the use of a water-cooled protective case was unavoidable.

Task:
Length measurement
Areas:
Finishing, Slitting lines
Measured Variables:
Length (VLM)
Description:
When cutting wallpaper rolls to the required length for sale, accurate length measurement is important. The VLM devices detect the length of the strip of wallpaper optically and contact-free and control the slitting system. Due to the accurate measurement you can abstain from safety margins. The contact-free mode of operation reduces the maintenance effort considerably. Creeping measurement errors caused by, for example, abrasion of the measuring wheel cannot longer occur.

Task:
Position detection
Areas:
Coil storage
Measured Variables:
Width (LDM)
Position (LDM)
Description:
In steel rolling mills the produced coils are stored on a large area, partly one on top of the other. When loading transport vehicles, LDS30A laser distance sensors are used, among others, to determine if the coil that is moved by the crane is in the correct position. Their high measuring rate of up to 30 kHz allows for sufficiently precise position detection while the coils are moved still hanging on the crane. Even very fast movements can be detected in a reliable way.

Task:
Position detection
Areas:
Engineering
Measured Variables:
Distance (LDM)
Position (LDM)
Description:
In the metal industry a lot of materials are processed in the form of flat straps. In the process metal straps are rolled up to coils. The coiling machines used for that need to be adjusted consistently, depending on the width and position of the strap. Distance measuring devices, such as the LDM41A are used for positioning the reels on the center of the strap. Due to their high precision and independence from the material surface properties, the coils or machine parts can be positioned accurate to the millimeter. In most cases, two laser distance measuring devices whose measured values are set against each other are deployed for this task in order to process different diameters or irregularly rolled coils. The capability to operate several devices on one bus line and to process the results in the control fast and in a central place make the LDM41P with an integrated PROFIBUS DP interface the perfect solution for positioning tasks in heavy machinery construction.

Areas:
Railway, Transportation
Measured Variables:
Presence (LDM)
Description:
Two laser distance sensors of the type LDS30A are used on a special measuring and inspection train. They are mounted onto the roof of the train and aligned vertically upwards. It is their task to measure the distance between the train and potential obstacles above it. This is done on inspection tours of the measuring train at velocities of up to 100km/h. The extremely high sampling rate of up to 30 kHz, which the LDS30A provides, ensures that the evaluation unit receives a distance value every 3 mm on the track.

Task:
Sandwich counter
Areas:
Packing
Measured Variables:
Quantity (CR)
Description:
Sandwiches are conveyed on a belt, and their number is to be counted as the daily production. Due to the fact that their position is not fixed and their height is not defined either a light barrier is not suited for this task. As the conveyor belt has a defined color, this color is taught in with several CR100 color sensors which are arranged widthwise. A counting impulse is sent to a central counter in case that at least one sensor does not recognize the background. The sensors are connected with an OR-circuit in the counter.

Task:
Velocity Measurement
Areas:
Flying saw
Measured Variables:
Velocity (VLM)
Description:
Wire rod with a diameter of between 10 and 18mm is cut in motion with a flying saw according to customers’ specifications. The 0.1% accurate measurement of velocity performed by the VLM device ensures synchronous movement between the saw and the wire rod. Damage or early wear by measurements that are subject to slip can thus be avoided. Velocities of between 20 m/min and 60m/min are applied. Shiny, oiled or dry surfaces are detected in a reliable way.

Measured Variables:
Velocity (VLM)
Degree of stretching and Skin pass level (VLM)
Description:
In order to control rolling mills according to the mass flow principle or to determine skin pass level or the degree of stretching, highly accurate measurements of differential velocity at the inlets and outlets of the stands are required. The VLM devices operate optically and contact-free, without slip and with measurement accuracy better than 0.05%. Due to the fact that several devices can be synchronized, they are well-suited to the measurement of differential velocity. Appropriate protective cases allow for their use in this environment.

Task:
Velocity measurement, Length measurement
Areas:
Tube inspection lines
Measured Variables:
Velocity (VLM)
Length (VLM)
Acceleration (VLM)
Description:
Ultrasonic and eddy-current testing systems for tubes and profiles require the speed of an object in order to synchronize the test probes on the moving objects. As individual objects pass the inspection line, the use of tactile measuring wheels would be very complex and failure-prone. The VLM operates optically and contact-free and records the speed of the object slip-free and precisely from the distance. At the same time the devices can determine the length of the object. The nature of the object’s surface does not have an influence on the measurement.
